We, like so many other bed bug information outlets, have said it  for some time. There is no such thing as a quick over the counter solution to a bed bug infestation. Federal regulators are now filing deceptive advertising claims against two companies marketing what they purport to be anti-bed bug products.

The claims against the companies making Rest Easy and Best Yet! bed bug sprays suggest that the product’s ingredients -which include cinnamon, lemongrass and cedar oil – will have no effect on bed bugs at all. (Best Yet! also claims to treat head lice, which the FDA also says is false.)

The news item from Huffington Post tells us that these RMB Group LLC who are responsible for Rest Easy have already settled, agreeing to not claim that their’s or any pesticide kills, repels, or creates a barrier against bed bugs.

This is all in line with what experts have said about bed bug infestations forever. The only way to handle them is with a full on extermination and, even then, there is a chance of a return. If what you have is bed bugs no spray can on the market is going to help you handle them. You need professionals.

The best bed bug exterminators in the world are probably those in New York City. In the years after the initial explosion of bed bug infestations they were on the frontlines developing ways to deal with this scourge. Solutions to the temporary nature of bed bug occupancy were created and can be incredibly effective, however they are not one hundred percent.

Instead, the only way to keep your home from once again being overrun by bed bugs is to have regular bed bug inspections with bed bug sniffing dogs. Sad to hear, sure, but at least there is a way of keeping the problem in check.

Luckily a bed bug problem might remain dormant for years, even decades. Theoretically, the bed bugs that sprang up in the last few years were in fact dormant for the long preceding period of relative bed bug peace. Still, it is your responsibility as a home owner with guests and a family to try and keep the problem at bay. Even if it has been dormant for many months a good once over on a regular basis can be helpful.

Luckily, while the exterminating tactics are not guaranteed the Bed Bug Professionals methods for finding bed bugs are.

One of these homes is being inspected for bed bugs.

If you have even the slightest suspicion of a bed bug infestation, chances are you have gone into something like solitary confinement. Perhaps, you are holding your whole family hostage until you find out if the problem is what you suspect. That said, no matter how sure you might be, you do not want the bed bug sniffing dogs coming into your home for inspection to be a piece of neighborhood gossip. Not until you know for sure – maybe not even then!

This is why the Bed Bug Professionals pride themselves on discretion. Their inspections are not about creating a sort of Scarlet Letter for a home or apartment in the midst of a densely populated area. They will arrive quietly and work quickly so that you can move on to your next phase of action quickly and without a neighborhood scare. What’s more, if it turns out to not be a bed bug infestation you do not have to put your home and family under a microscope.

Discretion is so important when looking for bed bugs. We have all seen the bed bug stigma attack movie theaters or clothing retailers, having it at your own doorstep can be very upsetting. Let the Bed Bug Professionals handle this for you and keep your standing in your community intact.

“Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite.”

Innocent though this little rhyme may be, it will literally send chills coursing up the spine of someone who has recently had a bed bug inspection blow through their home and turn their lives upside down. Attempting to sleep with a bed bug infestation can become a terrible series of sleepless nights of insomniac dread.

This is not just the inevitable uncomfortable bites that begin to collect on your person when these guys show up. It is something more insidiously psychological and far harder to shake.

Knowing that your home, and worse still your bed itself, might be filled with unwanted guests would be a nightmare no matter what they were. That the infestation is care of a swarm of quickly reproducing bugs that are seemingly impossible to stop without the assistance of an exterminator is all the worse.

Even once you have gotten rid of your NY bed bug problem chances are the worry will stick around for some time. Being inundated with these problems can be hard to shake. Luckily with the right exterminator you can start to get back to normalcy even as you continue to worry. Everyone has to move on.

Declining numbers of reported bed bug infestations are a good sign. They’re a  sign that we can be a bit less skeptical of going to the movies or shopping at certain retail chains. They’re a sign that perhaps our concern about that itchy fellow next to us on the subway is unwarranted. They are a sign that in the great war of man versus bed bug, a war that was only a few years ago newly reheated, man has come out on top. For a brief moment that did not appear to be so.

When bed bugs started making their much talked about resurgence in New York and elsewhere in 2008 and 2009, you could be forgiven for your paranoia. For the most part we had long since abandoned the best ways of managing the chomping critters. These days we have not only the effective services of exterminators but the helpful guidance of bed bug sniffing dogs for effective bed bug inspections in addition to a variety of laws around garbage disposal meant to curb the spread of bed bugs.

Winning the Great Bed Bug War has not been easy, and it might never truly be over, but where we are today in this fight is better than where we were just a few short years ago.

Other than the complete disruption of your life, the cost of an exterminator, replacing some of your clothes or (at worst) your furniture, the potential to spread them anywhere and everywhere, and the lasting tension the whole experience gives you; the worst part of having bed bugs in your home is those pesky bites. As with all bug bites, the results are little itchy bumps. With bed bugs though they tend to come in triangular formations of threes. That said, those triangular forms can nearly disappear completely into a mass of bites in the most extreme cases.

Dealing with those bites can be nearly torture (especially for kids), but as is always the case with itchy rashes and the like, DO NOT SCRATCH! Scratching can lead to scarring and a lot of blood. The whole thing can get really messy. Get some calamine lotion and apply it regularly. Make sure to wash regularly but do not scrub too hard, excessive scrubbing is just excused scratching.

No matter what you do, identify those bed bug bites quickly and get them out of your home. You are going through a rough time with your bites and while misery loves company, your friends and family don’t want you bringing them down with you.

Is it fleas?

You are itchy and you have hardly slept a wink in days. You do not necessarily see evidence that you in fact have bed bugs, but what do you know? You call in the Bed Bug Professionals bed bug sniffing dogs and turn up nothing. What could be going on?

One of the first things to question is whether pets have brought in some fleas. Fleas can come into the home after your cat or dog have spent even just a very brief moment outdoors. Suddenly they are on your bed making you worry about the presence of bed bugs.

For some, the theory is that if you do not see bed bugs you do not have bed bugs. This is not true, just because you don’t see them does not make them fleas. Getting the bed bug sniffing dogs in to rule out bed bugs should be a top priority.

If you do not have pets and think that fleas seem unlikely, it might be time to call in an actual exterminator. Be clear with them that you had your home checked for bed bugs and it came up negative. Chances are a local bug expert will be able to identify the problem soon after he arrives.

Attempting to manage a probable bed bug infestation with some generic spray purchased at a Target or the local Duane Reade is like putting a band-aid on an exposed bone. Chances are it is not going to help at all. Most sprays that claim to be for bed bugs also tend to be for fleas. By most yardsticks these sprays, while often effective for handling the latter, do not fair so well trying to vanquish the former.

There are very specific ways to handle bed bugs and they should be handled by a professional exterminator. Of course before you bring them in it is best to assure yourself that you are indeed dealing with bed bugs by calling in a bed bug sniffing dog.

Before you go out and buy the often pricey bed bug sprays you might want to scan around for user reviews. You might be shocked by just how ineffective these sprays can be and just how often those same bed bugs tend to rear their ugly selves again. In many cases the problem persists and the spray is barely capable of even maintaining for brief spells a bed bug free environment.

They could be under there.

Some people seem to think that a bed bug infestation tends to be specific to areas of the home like beds, linens, clothes and furniture with some kind of fabric available for the bugs to live in. Think again hot shot! Bed bugs can live for decades in wood working and really just about anywhere else they might want to live. There is no rule binding them to a given structure or material. Bed bugs can hide in the floor boards of your home long before you moved there and can stay long after you have left if not dealt with.

It is with this in mind that innovative folks began using bed bug sniffing dogs to suss out the origin of a given infestation and to identify that this was indeed a bed bug situation. Once the problem is identified the extermination process must be thorough and take into account the flooring, walls and ceiling to ensure that these critters do not once again go dormant for a period before rising up again and terrorizing your home and family once more.

So just because you see a bug no where near your bed does not mean you are assuredly not dealing with a bed bug situation. Be careful.

A bed bug infestation can be incredibly stressful and taxing on your life but consider for just a moment that what you are dealing with may not be an infestation as pervasive as bed bugs at all. The Bed Bug Professionals offer a stellar service to people concerned that they might have taken on some unwanted house guests. Using trained bed bug sniffing dogs the experts at Bed Bug Professionals can tell you whether what you are dealing with is bed bugs or not.

At the moment these bed bug sniffing dogs are the only option for uncovering and officially identifying a bed bug problem. Any other method of identification is less than perfect. Many exterminators will tell you that they can identify the problem but if there is no dog you can never be a hundred percent sure. Before you drag in an expensive extermination service make sure you know what you’re dealing with.
