The very idea of a “bed” bug is misleading to some. While some bed bug infestations have rendered mattresses unusable after an extreme infestation, it is actually not the place they are mostly likely to be laying in wait. Bed bugs can survive anywhere, but more often than not they will be found in the wooden frame of your bed before making the move towards the mattress.

In fact, most bed bug infestations that come from within a home are from the floor boards of a given room. There, bugs live for extended periods of time before overwhelming you and your home by moving anywhere and everywhere else. The moment that bed bugs begin to spread it can seem like they are everywhere but especially in things that are fabric, like mattresses and clothes. This is merely a product of the fact that these items are closest to us and as a result the first time we notice the infestation.

Of course, you will be hard pressed to get rid of all of the wood in your home. This is one reason why we are all so vulnerable to finding bed bugs in our homes. It is almost comforting in a way.

New York Third In Bed Bug Infestations

Hard to argue that New York City has the best theater, pizza, bagels and in offering a wide array of diverse cultural experiences. Philadelphia on the other hand is number one in cheesesteaks… and oh yeah, bed bug infestations. In fact with the help of dutiful exterminators, a major public awareness push, and of course the dutiful inspection services of bed bug sniffing dogs from The Bed Bug Professionals, New York has actually dropped from number one in bed bugs to number three. (Cincinnati took the second place slot.)

The easy commuting that occurs often between Phillie and the Five Boroughs of course means we need to continue to be vigilant about infestations not just from within our own city but from traveling as well.
